  1. State Data Center (SDC) Update July 23, 2014

  2. Agenda • SDC Colocation Overview • SDC Projects Status • SDC Projects Communication

  3. SDC Colocation 3

  4. State Data Center Overview Designed to be the most secure and efficient data center in Washington state government State-of-the-art infrastructure including power and cooling systems SDC is part of the state’s IT Consolidation and Transformation strategy with goals to reduce overall IT costs and improve security

  5. Consolidation Strategy Per legislation (ESSB 5931, Oct. 1, 2011), the state intends to consolidate data centers The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) developed and published the Updated SDC Business Plan which discusses next steps for OB2 as well as the consolidation of other state data centers OCIO recently distributed a survey to gather information about when agencies with data centers feel it makes sense for them to consolidate OCIO intends to publish another SDC Business Plan update in 2014

  6. SDC Facilities In 2013 the SDC Facilities Team completed the work required to make the SDC facility operational. This included areas such as: • physical security • access controls • equipment enclosures • structured cabling • customer power provisioning

  7. SDC Network Core In 2013 the Network Core Project completed establishing the network core in the SDC which connects to the OB2 network. Customers in using the SDC Colocation Service have a range of network management options. Customers can choose to manage their own network or have CTS manage their network for them. 7

  8. SDC Colocation Service • The SDC Colocation Service is operational. • The CTS Service Catalog is updated to reflect the new service: • Service description and rates have been published • Steps for new customers to follow to use the service are available • The Colocation Service Owner is supporting customer migrations: • Two of the twenty CTS A la Carte customers in OB2 have completed migration to the SDC • CTS is engaged with remaining OB2 customers • CTS is also engaged with additional (non-OB2) customers • Washington State Patrol (WSP) has established a presence in the SDC and is working with CTS to continue migration planning

  9. SDC Projects Status 9

  10. SDC Projects Reduce Heat Generated in OB2 Move the Load to the SDC (con’t) SDC Move Phase 2 CTS Cloud Utility Virtual Tape Library Prepare the SDC to Receive Equipment Facilities Core Network SDC Firewalls Storage Optimization OB2 Data Center OB2 Decommissioning OB2 Node Site Move the Load to the SDC Consolidation CTS Move Phase 1 Other Migrations to SDC (WSP) Reduce Heat in OB2

  11. SDC Projects Timeline

  12. Storage Optimization (Complete) The Storage Optimization project expanded the enterprise shared storage environment and implemented state of the art technology. The new technology supports growth and consolidation initiatives and reduces customer rates.

  13. Firewall Migrations • CTS has approximately 95 firewalls to migrate from OB2 to the new firewall solution in the SDC between March 2013 – September 2014. • Each migration has been a coordinated effort with customers. • We have completed 73 of the 95 migrations to date.

  14. CTS Move Phase 1 - Recap 517 of 517 virtual servers in OB2 have been moved or decommissioned. 264 of 287 physical servers in OB2 have been moved or decommissioned Completed migration of the messaging environment Completed numerous projects to migrate CTS security systems, including 8 change events supporting the migration of SAW and Fortress customer test and production Completed several telephony systems migrations Establish provider/carrier presence in the SDC Completed Unisys Mainframe migration and the stand-up of the IBM Mainframe to the SDC

  15. SDC Move Phase 2- Scope SDC Move Phase 2 moves the remaining systems out of OB2 into the SDC. In Scope: • Equipment supporting CTS services such as: • CTS internal support systems • Security systems • Telephony system • Network systems • Customer agencies in OB2 A la Carte

  16. CTS Cloud Utility • The goal is to transform the current CTS virtual server service into an automated service offering comparable to commercial public cloud providers. • Functionality • On-demand self-service portal
 • Capability to automatically provision, de-provision, archive compute resources
 • Secure multi-tenant infrastructure with complete business unit isolation • Role based access control
 • Customizable templates to support specific use cases
 • Automated billing processes

  17. CTS Cloud Utility Status Recent: • Completed SOW negotiation • Completed final contract paperwork (ELA and EULA) • Kick-off formal production pilot with customers (UTC & LNI) Upcoming: • Design production environment with VMware support • Install and configure production environment • Develop Cloud Readiness Guide

  18. DR - VTL Overview The goal of the Disaster Recovery - Virtual Tape Library Project is to implement a secondary VTL environment in the SDC, establish replication between OB2 and the SDC, replicate the data, then move the OB2 VTL to the DR site.  The VTL DR will serve as the offsite backup service for the production mainframe environments. CTS will be able to eliminate the existing physical tape infrastructure and avoid replacing the SL8500 tape robot and reduce physical tape related costs.

  19. DR - VTL Status Recent: • Completed development of the Request for Quotation and Qualifications (RFQQ) • Released the RFQQ with responses due August 4th Upcoming: • Select the Apparently Successful Vendor (ASV) • Kick-off the project

  20. Other SDC Projects OB2 Decommissioning: • CTS intends to have moved systems out of OB2 by June 30, 2015. OB2 Node Site: • DES is working on plans to repurpose the data center space, including an equipment room which will serve the IT needs of OB2. • Once the room is ready, CTS will move the its final OB2 equipment into the room. This currently includes equipment for a node site and PBX (telephony) serving the OB2.

  21. Customer Communications 21

  22. Customer Communications The Project Managers work individually with each agency to schedule planning meetings before each migration. CTS hosts a monthly AIC meeting to share status updates and respond to questions. This approach has been extremely successful when coordinating these complex activities. CTS Project Managers • The primary points of contact at CTS for customer-impacting SDC migration projects are: • Doug Wood: customer migrations • Jennifer Cox: firewall migrations Agency Implementation Coordinators • The primary point of contact for each impacted agency was identified as the Agency Implementation Coordinator (AIC).
