  2. 1767 Townshend Acts • Charles Townshend placed duties on many imports to the colonies • Taxed glass, paper, paint, tea • Writs of Assistance issued (blanket search warrants to search for smuggled goods)

  3. John Hancock • “King of the Smugglers”

  4. Colonial Protests • Immediate protests followed the Townshend Acts! • Illegal! • Only colonial assemblies had the right to tax! • Writs of Assistance, blanket search warrants, against “Natural Rights”!

  5. Boycotts & Daughters of Liberty • Boycotts in Boston, leads to more in other colonies by 1767 • Daughters of Liberty is formed, opposed to British policies, supports avoiding British goods

  6. Boston • Many in Boston called for no mobs! • 1,000 more troops (lobsterbacks) stationed there • Anger & tensions grow!

  7. March 5, 1770 Boston Massacre • Youths and dock workers surround soldiers in front of customs house (collect taxes) • Crowd grows, snowballs thrown, soldiers afraid, shots fired, five killed!

  8. Crispus Attucks • Former slave, Crispus Attucks, is the first to be shot and die!

  9. Trial • Soldiers were arrested and charged with murder • John Adams defends them • Argues they fired in self defense • Two convicted of manslaughter, others acquitted • Governor Hutchinson removes soldiers to offshore island

  12. Assignment A. Read the following review questions based on the power point and answer them on a sheet of paper or create a word document to print out and turn in tomorrow. Do not write essays. No answer should be more than 1-2 sentences. B. Once you are done with the above assignment, use the rest of your time to work on your project.

  13. Review Questions 1. Why do you believe that the Townshend Acts would have been so upsetting to the colonists?

  14. 2. A blanket search warrant allowed searches of peoples homes, businesses, boats, etc. without specifying exactly what they were looking for. Why do you believe this would have increased tension between the crown and the colonists?

  15. 3. One man had a great deal of money in the colonies and will later help to finance the American Revolution. He also profited greatly from smuggling goods. Who was this “King of the Smugglers?”

  16. 4. How did colonists react to the Townshend Acts? 5. Identify 3 of the arguments of the colonists. 6. Which of the 3 arguments do you believe was the best and most legitimate?

  17. 7. What did the boycotts in Boston lead to? 8. Identify how the Daughters of Liberty helped support the cause.

  18. 9. The engraving (picture) of the Boston Massacre was used as propaganda. How do you believe this would have generated rage against the crown and soldiers? 10. Explain if you believe the picture gives a true picture of what happened that day? 11. Identify the first person to die as a result of the “massacre.”

  19. The soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre were brought to trial. 12. Why do you believe John Adams, supporter of Revolution, defended the soldiers? 13. What was the fate of the soldiers? 14. Explain if you believe it was significant that Hutchinson removed the soldiers?
