  2. History • April 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast destroying communities and homes with flood waters reaching 10 miles inland. Once the storm passed the people of the Gulf Coast slowly began to pick up their lives and put together the remaining pieces of what was left. In turn, God showed up and the faith-based community from all over the United States and some international flocked to the coast to give a lending hand. Volunteers slept on cots, in abandoned buildings, trailers, and churches that were left standing. • The Churchyard began as an idea from a local pastor mustering elderly women into the church when he said, “Get inside and stop standing around like turkeys in the churchyard.” An idea for a way to connect volunteers with host churches and families was birthed. The first three months The Churchyard was live it received over 50K visitors all looking to connect with relief efforts. This led to the formation of an informational blog later turned social network. • Today, The Churchyard has left the social media world to return to it’s roots of an information exchange, and a Christian interest super highway. Much like our predecessors in this space, our goal is to give a worldview based off Christian values and human interest that connects people globally. • Thank you all who have followed us from the start and we look forward to the doors our Lord and Savior Jesus opens. God bless and get connected!
