  1. Padworth College Academic Summer School 2020

  2. Welcome Situated on an 12 acre site on the edge of the hamlet of Padworth, near the university town of Reading and with London close by, Padworth College’s Academic Summer School provides an ideal setting for learning, enrichment and enjoyment. The Academic Summer School is aimed at international students who will be joining British boarding schools in the Autumn or at those who wish to sample British education in the summer. We offer courses for Seniors aged 13-14 years and 15-17 years, over 2, 4 and 6 weeks. The Academic Summer School combines English learning with academic subjects, including Mathematics, Science, Business Studies, Geography and Global Perspectives. The core English language and academic programme is complemented by a varied programme of creative activities, sports, social programme and excursions. Although the focus of the Academic Summer School is on academic progress, the varied social programme and exciting range of activities and excursions ensure that students have a stimulating and rewarding summer experience. Students make real progress with their English, whilst also experiencing the globally recognised British curriculum and British culture. The safety and well being of students is of paramount importance and the College’s trained boarding staff ensure the welfare of students from arrival at the airport to the final departure. .

  3. Programme Overview

  4. Academic The Academic Summer School is aimed at international students who wish to improve their English, whilst following a traditional programme of academic subjects. Class sizes are small, with a maximum class size of 12 for English and academic subjects. Lessons take place in the College’s classroom block, offering a range of facilities in a modern learning environment. The timetable comprises 30 hours of academic tuition and 5 hours of supervised prep and a Group Multimedia Project. Students also benefit from weekly tutorials. Each student is assessed in English during the admissions process, with this Initial Assessment highlighting their CEFR Level. At the end of the course, all students receive a summary Academic Report, detailing their progress in English, academic subjects, sports and boarding. Students are also presented with a Course Certificate referencing their CEFR Level.

  6. Creative Arts For all students, the more formal English and academic classes are complemented by a programme of Creative Arts, including Art, Drama and Music. There are also opportunities for individual Music lessons and one-to-one tuition in Art (on request). These activities encourage speaking and listening and help build self confidence and develop self expression.

  7. Co-Curricular Programme The College’s extra-curricular programme includes a range of sports and a variety of clubs and activities, designed to foster team spirit and the confidence to integrate with others when students move on from Padworth. Sports include badminton, basketball, football, rounders, running, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. There is also a Fitness Centre on site. A wide range of clubs and activities are available and form a key part of the overall programme. In addition, group activities are planned for the evenings.

  8. Excursions As well as our on-site activities, we organise a stimulating and varied programme of fully-supervised trips at weekends. Some allow students to discover places of cultural, geographical and historical interest; others encourage students to sample the great outdoors, through walking, hiking, cycling and other physical pursuits. Sightseeing, cultural visits and even shopping provide contexts within which speaking and listening skills are put to the test; they are also great fun and provide memories to last a lifetime. Weekend trips may include London sightseeing, excursions to the nearby cities of Oxford and Reading, trips to the zoo, laser quest, theme parks, attending live sports events (football, hockey) and more.

  9. Boarding and Pastoral Care Boarding, with its strong focus on pastoral care and student welfare, ensures there is a balance of academic study alongside recreational and social activities. Students live on campus in boarding houses a short walk from the main building and teaching facilities. House Parents and other boarding staff reside on campus, ensuring a family atmosphere of care and support for all students at all times. Pastoral care provided through the residential team is complemented by medical support from the boarding staff (trained in first aid) and by healthy and nutritious meal choices from the onsite chefs. .
