  1. How did the ancients use numbers? By Davina Bacon 7MKR

  2. Introduction This Powerpoint is to teach you about how the ancients used numbers and how modern numbers were created. I hope you enjoy it.

  3. Historical Facts! • At first, the people of Europe used Roman numerals • The new modern digits came from India as they were made by the Hindus • The Arabic traders transmitted the numbers to Europe • A man called Fibonacci helped the numbers to be accepted in Europe

  4. Fibonacci • His real name was Leonardo of Pisa • He is famous for his sequence • He wrote a book called Liber Abaci about the new numbers to help them be accepted.

  5. Introduction of zero in Europe • The number zero confused the medieval people – they didn’t understand that they needed a sign for nothing. • The Indian mathematician, Brahmagupta, gave rules for the use of zero in his book as he knew most people didn’t understand it. He got a little bit wrong when he wrote about multiplication. • Ptolemy (a Greek astrologer) was the first Greek to write the number zero like this:

  6. Expansion of Maths • With the new numbers the medieval people could understand negative numbers better. • Maths could be done quicker and more efficiently than before. • It was easier than Roman numerals to work out what each number was.

  7. Foreign Numbers • The Egyptians had a system which was unary (they didn’t need a placeholder) and they used symbols. • The Greeks also had an unary system and used special letters. • The Babylonians had a positional number system but for many years they didn’t use a place holder – even though they really needed one. • Egyptian Numbers (below)

  8. Conclusion Summary I hope you have learnt something in this Powerpoint about how the ancients used numbers and how Europe used them. I also hope you enjoyed the Powerpoint. Thanks for watching! 
