Ranging and Network-entry RelatedUL CTRL Channels • Random Access Channel (RACH): combines ranging and network-entry together • Contention-based • Carries MAC information including MS MAC Address, etc. • Specific pilot pattern is defined to estimate channel as well as round-trip-delay • Long CP required to accommodate both maximum channel delay & round-trip-delay  MS transmits allocated subcarriers to RACH with long CP during two OFDM symbol periods. • Periodic Ranging Channel (PRCH) • Contention-free • Does not carry MAC information but just carry pilots to estimate round-trip-delay • Allocated Subcarrier Structure for RACH/PRCH Transmission

Ranging with Pilots in the RACH and PRCH • Round-trip-delay estimation with two adjacent pilots Pk and Pk+1 • Resource Allocation • RACH • Consists of N 18-by-6 resource units and carries MAC informationincluding MS MAC Address. • N143 data subcarriers and N43 pilot subcarriers per RACH • PRCH • PRCH consists of K two adjacent pilots • (318)/(2K) PRCHs per 18-by-6

Text Proposal 11.x UL Control Structure 11.x.x RACH This is contention-based uplink channel containing MS MAC Address, etc. In order to estimate channel as well as round trip delay, special pilot pattern should be defined in the RACH. 11.x.x PRCH This is contention-free uplink channel consisting of pilots to support for MSs to measure and track the time-varying round trip delay caused by the movements of MSs.
