  2. Basic Celebration: • Artigas Birth is celebrated during the National Holiday of June 19th. • It is celebrated with some official militar parades in very few of Uraguay's biggest cities. • People may put a National flag out their windows but not moré than that is done.

  3. Importance: • José Gervasio Artigas is revered as Uraguay's National hero. • Artigas was born in Montevido on June 19th, 1764. • Grandfather Washington one of the first setters of Montevido.

  4. Importance: • Artigas was raised in the Banda Oriental. • cattle-raising and wheat-growing region. • He was intelligent and active. • Too restless to join the priesthood, he joined a local militia, the Cuerpo de Blandengues. • He was heavily influenced by Félix de Azara, a Spanish naturalist with decided views of governing.

  5. Importance: • Jose saw action against Spain in 1811. • He became leader of the orientates. • During the time of the Banda was affliction with Argintina.

  6. The celebration is held all over Uruguay.
