COURSE OBJECTIVES • TO GAIN THE PROPER ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AND TINTERNATION AND THE TECHNIQUES TO ACHIEVE THEM • TO HAVE THE BASIC ENGLISH LISTENING AND SPEAKING ABILITY SUFFICIENTLY PRACTICED BASED ON THE COURSE BOOK FOR PROPER ACURACY AND FLUENCY IN ORDER TO HELP STUDENTS REACH THE STANDARDS REQUIRED BY 《STCW》78/95 • TO ACQUIRE THE RELAVANT VACABULARY,TERMINOLEGE,PHRASES AND EXPRESSIONS OFTEN USED IN SEAMEN’S DAILY ENGLISH CONVERSATIONS

COURSE LEARNING TECHNIQUES • BE FORE CLASS: PROPER PREPARATION OF WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS TO BE USED IN LATER CLASS • DURING CLASS: SUFFICIENT PRACTICE DIRECTED BY TEACHER • AFTER CLASS: PRACTICE READING ALOUD OF THE DIALOGUE LEARNED FOR ACURACY AND FLUENCY THROUGH IMMITATION RECITE THE KEY SENTENCES AND SELECTED PARTS DO ALL THE LISTENING AND SPEAKING PRACTICE BASED ON EXERCISES FOR EACH UNIT

COURSE REQUIREMENT Criteria for evaluating competence • Communications are clear and understood • Communications are clear and concise at all times • English language publications… are correctly interpreted or drafted • English language messages… are correctly drafted / handled In the STCW95 Convention, competence is evaluated by use of the communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

  8. COURSE REQUIREMENT Interpretation of STCW95 English language requirements for seafarers: • Seafarers need to demonstrate that they are able to use English for the purposes of communication • Seafarers need to develop communicative competence in English. Implication of STCW95 requirements for English language training • In order to achieve IMO competences, seafarers need to be trained to use English for practical purposes of communication • The languageteaching methodology should prepare seafarers for this.
