  1. God Understands Our Guilt Learning From the Life of David Psalms 6 Page 846, Psalm 38 Page 877, Psalm 51 Page 889, Psalm 32 Page 869

  2. The Background Story: • The Bible records the highs and lows of King David’s life. • When we read the Psalms we see how he dealt with the guilt of sin and as we read I want us to think of how we respond to guilt.

  3. What Are the Options? • Blame others, deny that it was a sin, claim ignorance, acknowledge it, or repent and ask for forgiveness. • In fact we often try a variety of these because we do not like the feeling of guilt. • The blessing of a healthy conscience.

  4. 2 Samuel 11:2-5 on page 486. • One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, • 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" • 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant."

  5. Psalm 6 on Page 846 • David writes this as he struggles with the physical impact of his sin and the changed relationship that he has with God.

  6. Psalm 38 on Page 877. • Here David is waiting for God to reply his appeal for mercy but God has remained silent because David is asking for relief and seemingly not offering true repentance.

  7. Psalm 51 on Page 889 • Verse 4: Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. • Verses 9-10: Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. • Verse 17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalm 32 on Page 869 • Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessedis the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah – Think about this!

  9. Psalm 32 on Page 869 • Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"--and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

  10. Psalm 32 on Page 869 • Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him. 7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

  11. Psalm 32:8-11 • 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. 9 Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. 10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD's unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him. 11 Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!

  12. About Guilt: • We can feel guilty and not be in the wrong and we can be in the wrong and not feel guilty!! • A changed life comes when our heart is tuned into God’s word so that we love to do right and feel guilt when we do wrong. • The guilt is intended to draw us closer to God but Satan wants us to use it to pull away from Him.

  13. This Week Take Note: • This week take note of your initial response to guilt. • When you have harmed God or others are you prone to blame, deny that it was a sin, claim ignorance, acknowledge it, or repent and ask for forgiveness?

  14. Take Your Sin To Jesus • There is nothing that Jesus cannot forgive if we will bring our sin to him and ask for forgiveness. • What do you need to take to Jesus so that you can experience the joy found in Psalm 32?
