  1. Earth Science • What is it?

  2. Tornadoes • Common in the mid-west

  3. Tsunami • California • Pacific Rim • Indian Ocean

  4. Hurricanes • New Orleans • Florida • Louisiana • Texas • Hawaii • East Coast

  5. Volcanic Eruption • West Coast • Pacific Rim

  6. Crater Impacts • All over Earth

  7. Landslides • California • Mountainous/Foothills

  8. Moon

  9. Sun • A typical Star • Continuous Nuclear Reactions

  10. Solar System • Located in our Galaxy called????

  11. Galaxies • Contain Billions and Billions of stars

  12. Meteorology Astronomy Geology Oceanography So what are the 4 branches of Earth Science again? MAGO means “magician” Use this word to help you remember the 4 branches of Earth Science. . .

  13. Astronomy • Study of objects beyond Earth’s atmosphere • Stars, Solar System, Galaxies

  14. Meteorology • Studies the Air that surrounds the Earth • Layers of the Atmosphere, Weather Patterns, Seasons

  15. Geology • Study of materials that make up the Earth • rocks, minerals, glacial movements

  16. Oceanography • Study of Earth Oceans • Physical and chemical properties, sea floor activity

  17. What shape is our planet?

  18. Four Main Systems • There are four main systems that we study in Earth Science • Each System is interdependent on each other • 1) Lithosphere • 2) Hydrosphere • 3) Atmosphere • 4) Biosphere

  19. Earth’s Layers crust Crust Lithosphere Upper mantle asthenosphere mantle Mantle Outer Core Inner Core Mantle continues downward

  20. Lithosphere • Its the outer shell of the Earth • crust and upper part of mantle that is rigid • the squishy part of the mantle is the asthenosphere

  21. Lithoshphere Crust Mantle Oceanic Continental Upper Lower Basalt Granite Solid Soft Plastic Asthenosphere

  22. Hydrosphere • The water in Earth’s lakes, oceans, rivers and glaciers • 97% of the Earth’s water is saltwater • 3% Freshwater

  23. Hydrosphere Freshwater Glaciers and Icebergs Lakes Rivers Groundwater 1% 24% 75%

  24. Atmosphere • Blanket of gas that surrounds our planet • 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen • 1% other random gasses and water vapor

  25. Biosphere • All organisms on the Earth, even Humans • Most live in the 1st few meters of Earth Surface • Only planet with life • Also includes the habitats of organisms

  26. Questions • What are the Four Main branches of ES? • List and describe the four systems of Earth Science • If a scientist was going to study the Earth’s weather, what branch of ES is that and why?

  27. Questions • What are the two types of Crust and what materials are they made of? • What percent of the hydrosphere is freshwater. • Of that freshwater a majority of that water is in the form of _____.

  28. What are the two main gasses in the atmosphere and what are their percentages. • What is the Biosphere? • If I studied features on the ocean floor what branch of ES would I be studying? • T/F: A vast majority of Earths water is fresh water
