  • The reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous, se) is used for two reasons:
  • To express an action done to oneself
    • Je me réveille, il se leve, tuteregardes…

2) To express the idea of reciprocity

    • Elles se parlent au téléphone
    • Ils se rencontrent.
    • On s’envoie des émails.
    • On se sépare.
    • On se marie.

  • Sometimes the reflexive pronoun changes the meaning of the verb or expression.
  • demander – to ask / se demander – to wonder
  • entendre - to hear/ s’entendrebien (ou mal) – to get along well (or badly)
  • occuper – to busy, to occupy / s’occuper de – to take care of
  • retrouver - to find again / se retrouver – to get together; to meet (again)
  • tromper – to wrong / se tromper – to be wrong, to make a mistake

  • Many verbs can be used both reflexively and reciprocally. In French, this is ambiguous, and speakers must rely on context to determine meaning.
  • Ils se parlent. – They are talking to themselves. / They are talking to each other.

  • En 2002, Paul McCartney s’estmarié avec Heather Mills. Ilsétaientamoureux.
  • En 2003, ilsonteuunefille, Beatrice.
  • En 2006, ils se sontséparés.
  • En mai 2008, ilsont divorcé et elle a volé tout son argent.

(The verb “divorcer” is not reflexive, like “se marier” or “se séparer”, and it is never followed by a direct object.)
