  2. Migration West • President Walter O’Malley wanted a new ballpark in Brooklyn. His plans got rejected. • O’Malley began threatening to take the team to another city. • New York Mayor Robert Wagner did not take the threats seriously. • In 1957 the Dodgers where moved west to Los Angeles, CA, where they still reside today.

  3. Migration West The 1950’s sent the Dodgers from New York to California.

  4. Civil Rights • In the early 20th Century African Americans were for to play baseball in a Negro League. • In the late 40’s to early 50’s Jackie Robinson was crossing racial borders by being the first African American to appear as a player in the MLB. • In the early 1950’s Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. • His deal with the Dodgers caused many conflicts within the league.

  5. Civil Rights (cont.) • Racial tension did not only appear in the league, but it also appeared within the team. • Some players stated that they would rather sit out of the game then to play alongside Robinson. • African American fans began flocking to Brooklyn and abandoning the Negro League teams.

  6. Consumerism • Many types of products were advertised using the Brooklyn Dodgers logo. • When the Dodgers were used in advertisements the product’s sales would increase drastically.

  7. Fun Facts • The Brooklyn Dodgers were the first team to sign an African American. • Anyone that lived in Brooklyn during the fifties were referred to as “trolley dodgers”
