Nestinarstvo • The ritual fire dancing on live coals – an ancient Bulgarian custom with Christian and pagan elements. • Has its roots inThracian traditions, in their sun worship. • Performed in several Bulgarian villages in Strandja Mountains near the Black Sea. • Usually performed on the day of St. Constantine and St. Helena, the patrons of fire dancers.

Nestinarstvo • Only fire dancers (nestinari) can do it - people dedicated to themystery of the ritual. • The dancers can be both men and women. • The dance is accompanied by the beat of a drum and the sound of a bagpipe. • It is believed that some of the dancers reach a religious state of trance while dancing. This explains why their feet don't get burnt and they don't feel pain.
