  2. Improving communications requires an understanding of : • The people and communities who live and work along the pipeline system • How they wish to receive important safety information • When they are most receptive to receiving safety information

  3. Improving communications requires an understanding of : • When they are most receptive to receiving safety information • What delivery methods are most effective in reaching numerous and diverse populations

  4. Improving communications with communities results from pipeline companies: • taking the time to reach out • actively listening to concerns • sharing perspectives • building understanding

  5. Federal/State regulations, the industry’s recommended practice (API RP 1162) and learnings from previous public awareness campaigns have led the hazardous liquid pipeline industry to: • Develop more detailed and specific public awareness programs • Broaden stakeholder audiences • Revamp messages and frequencies

  6. Revise of brochures, letters and materials • Each stakeholder audience with specific messages (Baseline and Supplemental) • Specific stakeholder subcategories • Focus group feedback • Design special campaigns

  7. Utilize risk factors to ascertain need for Supplemental enhancements • Develop Supplemental program assessment requirements and process • Develop API Survey Program to assist in the evaluation of program effectiveness

  8. Increase participation in targeted stakeholder conferences, open houses and community events • Increase use of media (newspaper, magazine, community newsletters, radio and television)
