    3. Mental State Assessment: Definition A mental status examination (MSE) is an assessment of a patient's level of cognitive (knowledge-related) ability, appearance, emotional mood, and speech and thought patterns at the time of evaluation.

    4. Mental State Assessment: Purpose. The purpose of a mental status examination is to assess the presence and extent of a person's mental impairment. The cognitive functions that are measured during the MSE include the person's sense of time, place, and personal identity; memory; speech; general intellectual level; mathematical ability; insight or judgment; and reasoning or problem-solving ability.

    5. BATOMI: The Simple Way to Assess B = Behaviour A = Affect – How they look Mood – How they say they are Appearance – attitude, dress. T = Thought – Flow / Content Talk (speech) – Content / Process O = Orientation M = Memory I = Insight / Intellect

    6. B = Behaviour Self caring – impaired, neglectful, disheveled, obsession with appearance. Eye contact – staring, looking into space (day dreaming), seeing ‘invisible’ objects, avoiding eye contact, strange movements. Agitation – Shouting, unable to keep still, hand wringing (anxiety), pulling at hair, head banging, biting nails. Motor retardation – Catatonic, drug induced. Tremor / dyskinesia / Dystonia

    7. B = Behaviour (2) Activity – repetitive / obsessive behaviours, isolating, withdrawn, overly-social, overtly sexual, aggressive, paranoid, mute, so on… Waxy flexibility: Remains in positions found in. Stereotypies / Tics / Mannerisms
