  1. 4.1Optoelectronic Market 光學市場 • Communications, storage, display, image acquisition are four major optoelectronic applications. Optoelectronic components, especially lasers and detectors, are typically at the base of most of these applications. According to OIDA reports in 1999, the market for optoelectronic components reached about $59 Billion.

  2. The growth in fiber optic communications was amazing as well as optical disk drives. China and South America are expanding markets for fiber optic communications. In image acquisition, the sales growth of digital camera was significant. Sales of flat panel computer monitors have also increased, and their new applications have increasingly launched as well.

  3. Communication-related products show the largest growth. Optical fiber and cable, and passive components were the most popular products. The passive components used in wavelength division multiplexing technology are often applied in other complex subsystems such as optical amplifiers.

  4. Optoelectronic products are increasingly manufactured worldwide. Though some American large optoelectronics manufacturers have established many production lines located offshore, North American manufacturers in communications market are still in a leading position worldwide and the Far East remains dominant in storage and displays.
