  2. Whitman House Visitor’s Center • The visitor’s center is located adjacent to the Whitman house & is where visitors are given an introduction to Whitman’s history of residence in Camden.

  3. Inside The Visitor’s Center • Inside the visitor’s center, as you will see, there are many works of art that relate to Whitman. This is a painting of Whitman on a boat.

  4. Inside The Visitor’s Center • Here we see a stone sculpture of Whitman along with an array of informational brochures.

  5. How Whitman’s Street Looked Then…

  6. Choosing Camden • It is thought that Whitman made the choice to move to Camden because he wanted to be in close proximity to his brother & because the city reminded him of the Long Island, NY of his youth.

  7. Choosing Camden • Whitman moved to Camden after suffering a stroke. • Camden was ideal for the poet both because it was a bustling port of Philadelphia and a rapidly developing city.

  8. Whitman’s Living Room

  9. The Living Room • Here is Walt’s living room… • The rocking chair you see actually belonged to Whitman. • The poet actually always preferred to write in a rocking chair, instead of a desk!

  10. The Living Room • The painting above the fireplace is a portrait of a close friend of Whitman’s. • The statue in front of the fireplace is of president Grover Cleveland.

  11. Can anyone guess what this is?

  12. Carriage Step • The carriage step was common to residences on Whitman’s street at the time he lived on it. • The step has been preserved because of historical significance, unlike the rest on the street.

  13. The Bedroom • Here you see the bed that Whitman slept in… • You can also see the tub that Whitman used to clean himself once he was bedridden.

  14. The Outhouse • Although Whitman’s house had hot running water before the White House, sewage technology was still developing.

  15. Whitman House Questions • Please take a minute to finish any of the questions that you have not yet answered on your question sheet.
