Making Climate Change fun by Laura Toole (Year 7) Woodleigh School, Baxter, Victoria
Making climate change fun! • Use less energy! • This means less money spent on things like electricity, gas and transport • Monitor and reduce • Calculate your savings in Carbon Gases and $$$
So how do I save energy? • Start off with simple things like: • turning off lights • put warmer clothes on rather than use heaters if possible • put a limit on time spent using electronic entertainment devices such as TVs • If you have a tumble dryer/dishwasher etc try not to use it excessively • don’t spend too long in the shower • Walk, run or bike • share transport, i.e. take the bus or travel with friends
Reasons to use energy: To cook – electric oven, gas oven, electric stove, gas stove, microwave oven, grill, kettle, toaster, and BBQs Personal hygiene – water heating and electricity use for showers and baths, drying hair Entertainment – computers, TV, phones, electrical instruments, DVD/game consoles Laundry - washing machines, dryers, heaters (if you hang things up in the laundry) Dishwashing – Dishwashers, water heating (if you wash by hand) Heating – electric, wood fire, gas heating. What energy do we use?
Monitor and reduce Estimated Family Carbon Footprint: 23.5 tonnes per year Estimated annual saving: $2,800
How I calculated our emissions! • I used information from service providers. • Electricity company • Information from family sources • Fuel consumption • Change in water use • Other sources for total foorprint • http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/GreenhouseCalculator/calculator/default.asp
