  1. Misconceptions About The Church

  2. Misconceptions About The Church • Not necessary to be a member to be saved. • The Lord’s church is a denomination. • The church of Christ is a cult. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in the OT.

  3. Christians believe what the NT says about the OT. Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given me to do. Galatians 3:19-25

  4. Christians absolutely believe in the OT. Romans 15:4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… 2 Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 10:1-12

  5. We don’t turn to the OT for authority today. Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

  6. Misconceptions About The Church • Not necessary to be a member to be saved. • The Lord’s church is a denomination. • The church of Christ is a cult. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in the OT. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in music in worship.

  7. Huh?

  8. Christians believe in offering God the kind of music for which He asked. Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

  9. But they used instruments in the OT! • They sure did! • They also killed goats and bulls and burned incense. • 2 Chronicles 29:25 And he stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the LORD by His prophets.

  10. Playing of mechanical instruments of music in worship • Sporadic use beginning around 650 AD. • Not widespread use until 1300 AD. • John Calvin (Presbyterian) - “no more suitable than burning incense.” • Martin Luther (Lutheran) - “a work of Baal.” • John Wesley (Methodist) - “no objection to instruments of music, as long as they are neither seen nor heard.”

  11. Does it make a difference? Genesis 4:3-7 Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

  12. Misconceptions About The Church • Not necessary to be a member to be saved. • The Lord’s church is a denomination. • The church of Christ is a cult. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in the OT. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in music in worship. • The church of Christ doesn’t believe in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

  13. Christians believe what the Spirit reveals about the way He indwells us. John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  14. Christians believe what the Spirit reveals about the way He indwells us. Romans 8:1-11 Ephesians 5:18-19 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

  15. Indwelling 1 John 4:15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. Therefore – Literal, personal indwelling of the Father?

  16. Indwelling John 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. Therefore – Literal, personal indwelling of Jesus?

  17. Indwelling Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Therefore – Literal, personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

  18. Indwelling Do the Father and Son literally, personally indwell us? John 14:19-24 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, andWe will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

  19. Indwelling Do the Father and Son literally, personally indwell us? 1 John 2:3-6 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. 1 John 3:24 – 4:1 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Ephesians 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;…
