  1. A New Testament Outline Spring Semester 2003 Agitated Inspiration - Galatians Lesson Number Six Pastor Marvin McKenzie

  2. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • Galatians was written about the year 48AD. This would have been prior to his second missionary journey and would have been his first Epistle. • One of the more interesting things about reading Paul's writings is how much time is devoted in them to defending what he preached. • It seemed like he just barely would leave a place when another group of professing Christians would come and try to turn those he had led to Christ away! • They would enter into the congregations that Paul had established, AND THEN TRY TO CONVERT THEM TO THEIR OWN WAY OF THINKING!

  3. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • There were several groups that would do that in Paul's day, • But one of the more prominent, and the ones involved here, were called JUDAIZERS. • Their doctrine was essentially, THAT YOU COULD NOT BE A CHRISTIAN UNLESS YOU WERE FIRST A JEW. • They were consequently trying to talk Paul's converts into being circumcised and becoming Jewish proselytes. • They would argue that Paul didn't have the authority to do what he was doing, that he was not a full fledged Apostle, and there fore should not be trusted.

  4. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • Paul here stands with holy indignation and proclaims Ø His authority before the Lord and Ø His agitation that they had removed or turned from what he had taught them!

  5. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • I have found most preachers have to spend a lot of time Ø CONTENDING FOR THEIR POSITION, • Because there is always somebody that doesn't think they should be able to do what they are doing, and Ø CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH, • Because there is always somebody that wants to turn their doctrine to another!

  6. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • Galatians breaks down into three sections: • (outline taken from J Vernon McGee) • I. A PERSONAL PART • Chapters 1:1-2:14 • “Paul’s independence of human authority” • W.A Criswell, Criswell Study Bible, pg 1376

  7. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • I. A PERSONAL PART • A. Paul’s Experience in Arabia • 1:11-24 Ø His gospel was received directly from God • Vs 10-12 • You will never convince a man of the truth of the gospel. Only God can to that! Ø His training came not from flesh and blood • Vs 13-17 • It is not wrong to receive training. • Paul trained men and instructed us to do the same. • But no amount of human training can replace that which you learn when you are alone with the Lord!

  8. Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • I. A PERSONAL PART • B. Paul’s experience with the Apostles • 2:1-10 Ø Barnabas brought him to Antioch • Vs 1 • Praise the Lord for a man like Barnabas who will enlist men in the work of the Lord Ø Met privately with the Apostles • Vs 2 • It makes sense to examine a man’s doctrine in private so as not to embarrass them or cause conflict among those who hear their position.

The Experience of the Galatians • 3:1-3:5 Ø They had seen the truth of Christ crucified • Vs 1 Ø They had received the Spirit by the hearing of faith • Vs 2 Ø They had been bewitched to turn from truth • Vs 3-5 • Some who get saved get turned from the truth through false teachers. • They are still saved but they are not right with the Lord. • They have been deceived • They are being fools
