  1. Gestation Stalls in Hog Production By: Celsey Moody

  2. Animal Activists and Economy • Think farmers use stalls to help with economics • Iowa State University did a study, 11% less of facility costs

  3. Animal Activists and Companies • Got Smithfield to phase out • Got McDonald’s and other food chains to stop selling meat from stalls

  4. Animal Activists and Health • When pigs lay down their legs get stepped on • Lameness from not being able to move around • Infections from laying in filth

  5. Animal Activists Want farmers to switch from gestation stalls to open stalling. VS. X

  6. Farmers Show Healthy • Pigs defecate out the back • In open housing pigs get picked on • When moved to stalls less medication was administered

  7. Farmers and Feed • Stalls allow the farmer to monitor feed • Obese pigs leads to difficulty birthing • Open housing dominate pig can hog the feed

  8. Farmers Keep the stalls. Study showed that when allowed to choice pigs spent 90% of their time in the stalls anyways.

  9. Mediation • Phase out stalls slowly • Easier with gilts, young girl pigs • Farmer and scientist need to work together to find a “true solution”

  10. Mediation • Studies have shown there’s not much of a difference in housings • Smithfield announced the they were 40% phased over
