Society Develops • Civilizations begin developing in America about 3,000 years ago. • Activity – What attributes/characteristics do you look for in a civilization? • Middle and South America • Olmec, Maya, Aztec, Inca • Desert Farmers – in and around AZ • Hohokam, Anasazi • Mound Builders • Adena, Hopewell, Mississippian

  6. Tribal Life • Activity – What would be 3 main things that Native American tribes would base their lives on? • Read Pgs. 9-10 make 2 bullet points for each of the following groups: • California • Northwest Coast • Southwest • Eastern Woodlands

Shared Cultural Patters • Trading Networks – sharing of goods and skills • Elaborate trails • Land Use – “land is the source of life” • Not to be sold – conflicts with whites • Religion – “Great Spirits” • Living or Not • Social Organization – • Family (respect of elders) • Division of labor – do your part

Colonization • Colonization – the establishment of distant settlements controlled by a parent country • Spaniards forcing their ways on the natives • Attempted forced labor, resistance • Conquistador – conqueror • Disease wipes out natives • African slave trade begins • Trade of goods to and from Europe, Africa and Asia (map on pg 29)
