At twelveyearsoldEeroSaarinen won his first design, byillustrating a story entirelywith matches for a Swedishnewspaper. The price was 30 Kroner or $ 8.
  • The architect born in Finland grew up surroundedby design. His father was a famous architect and his mother was a talentedsculptorandtextile maker. Afterstudyingarchitecture at Yale, he followed in the footsteps of his fatherandbecameactive in the family business.

WhenSaarinen’s winning design for the St. Louis Gateway Archsending, the prize was accidentallytransferredto his father. Although his architectural masterpieces receivedseriousrecognition (and a spot on the cover of Time magazine in 1956) are among his furnitureamong the most celebrated of the twentiethcentury.
  • One of the most prominent modernists, Saarinendesigned the pedestal Collection toalleviate the clutter in American homes. “The frame of the chairsandtables in a typicalinteriormakesanugly, confusing, troubledworld.
