Federal Data Integration Needs • The Federal Enterprise Architecture’s Data Reference Model 2.0 is about data interoperability for information sharing within and across communities of practice /interest: • Specification – Adopted December 2006. • Management Strategy – still in process • Implementation and Testing Plan – I led this last year, then evolved it to a SICoP SWIM Work Group (Semantic Wikis and Information Management) for Trusted Reference Knowledge and evolved it further to DRM 2.0 + Semantic Metadata = Knowledge Reference Model 1.0.

Data Reference Model 2.0 Relationships and associations • Metamodel: Precise definitions of constructs and rules needed for abstraction, generalization, and semantic models. • Model: Relationships between the data and its metadata. • Metadata: Data about the data. • Data: Facts or figures from which conclusions can be inferred. Source: Professor Andreas Tolk, August 16, 2005 The purpose of this schematic is to show that we need to describe information model relationships and associations in a way that can be accessed and searched.

  5. 2. Data Reference Model 2.0 The point of this graph is that Increasing Metadata (from glossaries to ontologies) is highly correlated with Increasing Search Capability (from discovery to reasoning).

Where Current Technology Meets/Misses • Knowledge Discovery Framework: • Level 1: Concept Extraction • Level 2: Relationships Between Words and/or Concepts • Level 3: Fully Expressive Representation Modes (e.g. RDF/OWL) • Level 4: • 4.a Context determination – usually applied to the entire information source that generated the set of specific entities; this helps to determine which ontologies / taxonomies to invoke for further understanding of the concepts and entities. • 4.b Geospatial referencing – a natural step following entity (place) extraction. • 4.c Analytics – e.g., associating and processing available “data” that correlates with extracted entities. • Level 5: Deep Semantic Analysis Source: Knowledge Discovery, Alianna Maren, August 2006.

Overview of Business Objects EIM Capabilities • Thursday, September 7, 2006, 8:30-11:30 a.m.: • Why an EIM platform is critical to your agency’s success and how it can help improve the overall quality of information and performance. • The How Business Objects EIM solutions help agencies join data from different sources, reconcile calculations, eliminate the millions of small inconsistencies, and gain a single view of the truth. • How the technologies and corresponding processes that make up the EIM platform – data quality, data integration, and metadata management – interface together to deliver consistent and accurate data the way you need it. • Tips from your peers who have already made it past the obstacles to achieve real results and answer key performance questions. • Questions: Is this done with semantic standards (W3C) and technologies?

SICoP DRM 2.0 Piloting Opportunities • October 10-11th: 5th Semantic Interoperability for E-Government Conference – call for proposals has closed, but I will work with you if you still want to submit for the Breakout and/or the Poster / Exhibit Sessions. • Mid-September: Start of regular working conference calls using the VK Test Semantic Wiki.
