  2. 20,000 Nonprofit Members Diverse: by subsector, size & funding Arts, Culture, and Humanities Community Service/ Civic Engagement Education Environment & Animal-Related Health Care Human Services International Philanthropy & Grantmaking Religious & Spiritual 93.6% < $ 1 million, yet consume < 5% of sector’s total expenses 3.7% >$10 million, and consume >82% of sector’s total expenses • 29% of the sector’s revenue • comes from government • contracts and grants

Key Facts • The vast majority of nonprofits are small and midsize. 93.6% of all nonprofits have budgets of under $1 million. • With 9.4 million employees and 4.7 million volunteers, the nonprofit workforce consists of more than 14 million people and 10.5% of America’s workforce. • The nonprofit workforce employs more than: • the construction industry (7.2 million) • finance (5.2 million) • transportation (5.1 million) • real estate (2.1 million)

  5. Recommendations to the Presidential Transition Team • Substance – Why it matters to the National Grants Partnership: A. $$ to states & local government (why?) B. Social Entrepreneurship Agency (why?) C. Restore Americans’ voices via nonprofits (why?)

  6. Recommendation:$$ to states & local government “We encourage the Obama Administration to design an economic recovery plan that focuses firston maximizing operatingbudget relief for state and local governments.”

  7. Why Important? • Americans are suffering. • Nonprofit organizations whose primary purpose is the delivery of human services rely on $85.3 billion in government funding annually – 66% of their total support – and they employ 3.4 million people to serve more than 98 million Americans. • Dr. Paul Light: 100,000 nonprofits will vanish in the next 6-24 months

Recommendation:Social Entrepreneurship Agency The Obama Plan: create an agency dedicated to: • improving coordination of programs that support nonprofits across the federal government • streamlining processes for obtaining federal grants and contracts, and eliminating unnecessary requirements • removing barriers for smaller nonprofits to participate in government programs

  9. More Specific Recommendations • Provide nonprofits with necessary and adequate general operating costs in grants and contracts • Insist that nonprofit contractors/grantees be reimbursed fully and fairly • Adjust and speed up payment reimbursement procedures for payments to nonprofits

  11. Bottom-line • Partners sit as equals at the table. • Heads-up: the nonprofit sector is tired of being taken for granted and treated like the “invisible” sector. • The public wants change. As the economy continues to crash, the public will be demanding change. • Let’s role up our sleeves, together, governments and nonprofits, to deliver the change the public demands and deserves.
