Job Duties & Responsibilities • Supervises inventory process • Retrieve merchandise for customers • Greet customers as they enter the door • Help customers with product questions • Handle customer service related issues • Supervise opening and closing procedures • Handle bookkeeping and paperwork procedures • Displays merchandise in a visually appealing manner • Supervise employees in the completion of their assigned duties

  3. Qualities and Skills A garden center manager needs to enjoy working with people and plants. They must be able to motivate others through an enthusiastic, outgoing and pleasant personality. They must possess good public relation skills as well as good oral and written communication skills.

  4. Salary Small local owners and operator have a different salary than the large corporations. As a worker trying to begin you would be paid hourly and as you moved up the floriculture ladder your salary would increase. Salaries range from around $8,000 to $10,000, up to $40,000+ per year for senior management position.

  5. Work Environment • All weather conditions • Work week is usually 40+ hours per week, especially during peak season • Work may be done indoors or outdoors • Surroundings are likely to be wet and/or dirty • Must be willing and able to work with various people

  6. Becoming a Garden Center Manager A formal education is not always necessary, but most employers would prefer one. A two or four year degree with a major in Horticulture and a minor in business or an Agribusiness major with a minor in Horticulture is the recommended college path. Several years experience in a horticulture related retail/wholesale related job can be an alternative to having a college degree. Many companies require all employees to start at the ground level. Those interested in being a manager must undergo a training period. Becoming the garden center manager is as high as one can go and still work with the customers. However, positions may open up in administrative positions.
