4. Objectives • build a sustainable audience for films in Kenya and eastern Africa by encouraging culturally-relevant, audience-sensitive films, preferably in local languages • establish a film resource centre to benefit students, scholars, researchers, journalists and other seekers of information

5. work with national and international partners in the training of young, up-and-coming audiovisual talents in fields such as screen writing, cinematography, acting, directing and producing

6. build a pool from which filmmakers can access means of production • produce at least five quality, low-budget, short films per year from training workshops • hold a monthly film forum for players in the filmmaking sector through which to exchange ideas and network: held every last Monday of the month since December 15, 2005

Lola Kenya Screen • Established in October 2005 as a movement that uses appropriate and available technologies to deliver audiovisual media content that complements, enhances, entertains and promotes learning among ((children and youth—in the promotion of literacy, gender equity, independent thought, human rights, environmental responsibility and global health

8. explores, identifies and nurtures creative talent among children and youth in areas such as journalism, filmmaking, arts appraisal and appreciation, and organisation and presentation of cultural and creative events. This is aimed at equipping children and youth with the skills to understand, appreciate, and create quality audiovisual productions in particular, and arts in general

Achievements So Far… • showcased more than 1200 films from 71 nations representing all the continents in various genres, formats and lengths. • helped add 31 child filmmakers, 14 journalists, 13 film judges, 7 MCs, 15 producers of television drama for and youth and 6 producers of documentary films for children and youth to eastern Africa’s creative and cultural spectrum. • won Kids for Kids Africa grand prize in 2007 and 2008 • Won Special Jury Prize at 17th Jugend Medien Festival Berlin 2008 • Made 20 short animation films • Made six short documentaries

Lola Kenya Screen 2008 attracted participation from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Zimbabwe • watched films from 56 nations • equipped with skills for making films • appreciating and judging audiovisual media production • presenting programmes • filing daily reports on the festival. • The festival venues: Kenya National Theatre, Alliance Francaise, several video halls in Kibera

12. Festival Press is aimed at uplifting the standards of creative and cultural journalism in eastern Africa Production Workshop empowers children and youth to make at least five quality, low-budget, moving images per year. Programme Presentation empowers children and youth to organise and present events and programmes. Such children are usually in charge of the programme during the six days of the festival. The Film Jury seeks to inculcate in participants skills with which to critically appreciate and appraise creativity in general and film in particular. The jury members watch and award films in competition. The official Lola Kenya Screen Jury consists only of children and youth.

13. Lola Kenya Screen Awards The Lola Kenya Screen top award—presented by the Children’s Jury—is the Mboni, split into three classes: • Golden Mboni Award • Silver Mboni Award • Bronze Mboni Award

Other Awards include: • Best First Director (Presented by ArtMatters Critics Guild) • Best Student Film (Presented by ArtMatters Critics Guild) • Creativity Award (for best project at the Lola Kenya Screen Film Production Workshop; given by workshop facilitators) • Best Kenyan Children’s Film (Presented by the Children’s Jury) • Audience’s Choice (given by the audience)

Lola Kenya Screen Film Forum • runs every last Monday of the month at Goethe-Institut • brings together filmmakers, film critics, film writers, students, scholars, policy-makers within government departments, associations, funders, actors and actresses, social awareness groups, cultural agencies and other players with a stake in the film sector • selected local film is screened followed by open discussion based on the film and matters arising as pertains to filmmaking in the region • The films exhibited and discussions arising from them are reviewed and published by ArtMatters.Info with a view to promoting films; the stories are picked by film festivals, media schools and international funding agencies around the world; the articles are also picked by journalists and other mass media for reproduction
