  1. 5 Steps in Talking With Patients for Alternative Therapies

  2. Introduction • Patients whose using alternative medicine or therapies often do not tell their physicians. • Physicians having lesser knowledge about effectiveness of alternative therapies & medicines. • Patients need to get proper treatment and expert advice from their physicians. • Physicians have to ask to their patients about alternative medicine so that they they can help much more efficiently.

  3. Ask the Patient The first and most portal step is asking the patients if they are using natural health products or visiting an alternative practitioner.

  4. Explain the Consequences • Most patients might believe that natural products are better and safer. Explain to them that the same treatment not affect everyone. • If a herb or an alternative medicine benefits your friend, it does not necessarily mean it is useful or will work for them.

  5. Be Patience & Non-Judgmental • Patience is a virtue. Always listen and appreciate your patient’s way of thinking about health and treatment. • Do not instantly dismiss what they share as useless. Instead, find a common the ground where there can be agreement.

  6. Make the Process Collaborative • A collaborative approach ensures better care. Patients and healthcare professionals should talk to each other to better understand what is being done. • Doing so will. help make the care truly integrative.

  7. Do Compromise While often physicians might feel the approach of my way or highway to be correct, but when they are willing to compromise and negotiate, the care seems more patient-centered.
