  2. Neighborhood Statistics • 54% of residents have been affected by violent crimes (trulia.com, 2013) • Students feel the impact, learn less when they are worried about, or affected by violence.

  4. Shootings…. Look at the map…the red clusters indicate a higher amount of shootings. Do you see the Back of the Yards? Covered in red…

  5. So What Can We at Hedges Do? • Incorporating culturally responsive teaching methods of reshaping the curriculum and using teachers as facilitators, we can begin those rich conversations in our neighborhood. Involving the community will help us bring about change. We can begin by asking community members for their input regarding violence prevention tactics in our neighborhood such as Neighborhood Watch signs, joining CAPS, and creating a curriculum for our adolescent and primary students.

  6. What will STOP THE VIOLENCE! Look like? • Students, parents, community members and leaders, alongside teachers, faculty, and staff of Hedges working together to bring awareness of the issue to the forefront through: Drama Art Literature Conversations

  7. Looks Like…. • The primary students performing a play created by the seventh and eighth grade students from the point of view of victims of violence. • Local CAPS officers on hand with informational brochures • Circle of Peace sign-ups: get more people to go door to door passing out leaflets

  8. Event Materials • CAPS brochures listing LSC meeting dates and times: get the parents and community more involved in what we are doing to prevent violence in school

Event Materials • Circle of Peace informational leaflets: what we do, how we do it, when we do it • (Circle of Peace currently meets once a month to create a newsletter about neighborhood violence stats, passed out by canvassing neighborhood. Includes suggestions and a poll to begin Neighborhood Watch)

  10. What are the Gains for our Students? • Besides the most obvious gain being an increased awareness of current events, our scholars will gain from: • Hearing different perspectives on an issue that affects them directly • Evaluating an issue, and problem-solving strategies with all stakeholders • Preparing a persuasive letter to…mayor? Governor? Stakeholders and the community?

  11. Increase our Global Perspective • As part of the activities, invite students and parents to work together to create a new school mural that showcases our great diversity! Include multimedia clips about how other countries perceive Chicago, and invite students to brainstorm ways to change that perception Skype with an international school during our event!
