  1. B737 GPS/FMS Part 6: Flight Plan Exercise (Part 1)

  2. Background • This will be a PTT flight exercise with a flight plan from Edmonton to Toronto • The reference for this exercise is CMA 900 Operator’s manual, the attached flight plan and the enroute, arrival and approach charts provided • The departure from Edmonton will be from RWY 30 and arrivals in Toronto are using RWY 24L and 24R

  3. To prepare the PTT for the flight, set the HDG SEL to RWY 30 (296 degrees), the ALT SEL to 33000, the EFIS mode to HSI and the LEGS page 1 To execute a take-off, adjust the SPD SEL to 210 kts and the aircraft will take off and climb

  4. After take-off, ATC will clear the aircraft for a “Right turn heading 040”. Change the HDG SEL to 040 and the aircraft will turn to 040. Note: the autopilot is in HDG SEL mode (green annunciator). After rolling out on a heading of 040, ATC will call “ CDN 950 cleared direct CAMRA flight plan route”. To do this, move CAMRA into the scratchpad, then back to <LSK 1L> then EXEC. Engage the FMS to the autopilot by changing from HDG SEL to LNAV ENG (ON). Accelerate to 420 kts.

  5. While enroute to CAMRA, notice the presentation on the EFIS (HSI mode) is similar to that found on the existing HSI. Select PROG page 1/4.

  6. The following data is provided: • Track, distance to go (DTG) and ETA at the current wind and TAS for the active waypoint (CAMRA in magenta) • the next waypoint, its distance and ETA • the True wind (notice the green caret allowing one to toggle between True and Mag wind), the aircraft track and ground speed • the cross track angle and cross track distance • the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and the Actual Navigation Performance (ANP) • HSI full scale distance • Nav Mode

  7. RNP (Required Navigation Performance) is defined by the phase of flight and is automatically determined by the FMS. Enroute: when neither in terminal or approach mode RNP: 2 nm HSI Scale: 5 nm full scale Terminal: for arrivals, when below 15,000 AGL and with 30 nm of the arrival airport, but not in approach phase of flight. For departures, when below 16,000 feet AGL and less than 33 nm radial distance from the departure aiport RNP: 1 nm HSI Scale: 1 nm full scale Approach: when below 15,000 feet AGL and within 2 nm of the FAF, with all the GPS instrument approach conditions satisfied RNP: 0.3 nm HSI Scale: 0.3 nm full scale

  8. The RNP value can be manually changed by the pilot by inserting the new value into the scratchpad then using <LSK 5L>. If the pilot selected value is a higher value than the default value, the FMS will confirm that you want to use a lower standard of RNP. In either case - a lower or higher value - the font will become large indicating that is was a crew defined value not an FMS value. ANP is determined by the number of satellites and their geometry (DOP) (see Part 1: GPS Theory and Operation)

  9. Press <LSK 6L> to get Nav Mode. This display provides the FMS position and ground speed from the GPS sensors Press <LSK 6R> to get Nav Status.

  10. Select GPS <LSK 1R> This display provides a variety of GPS information, as discussed in Part 1 Using the NEXT command, other navigation related information is provided This information can also be found by INIT REF, NAV STATUS, GPS Press <LSK 6L> to get Nav STATUS. Select PREDICT RAIM

  11. This display shows whether the GPS satellite coverage will be adequate for the approach in Toronto. It performs the calculation knowing the destination from, the route, and ETA. The predictive RAIM is performed for 15 minutes before and after the arrival time in 5 minute increments. The default is for a PRAIM at the destination airport at the ETA. Any waypoint and any ETA can be used <LSK 1L> and <LSK 2L>, respectively) to perform a RAIM prediction

  12. Press <LSK 6R> to get GPS Satellite Deselection This feature provide the pilot with the facility to remove GPS satellites from the position solution and RAIM solution. This can be used when a GPS satellite is forecasted to be out of service. In this case it is best to remove the satellite in advance rather than losing it during a critical period To deselect or reselect, insert the satellite number in the scratchpad then use appropriate line select key.

  13. Return to PROG page 2/4 This display is similar to a position report with waypoints, ETA’s and distances to go.

  14. PROG page 3/4 shows the Required Time of Arrival (RTA) information Any waypoint that is part of the flight plan can be inserted in <LSK 1L>. Also, if an average wind is inserted in <LSK 3L>, the RTA prediction is refined. This will provide an RTA, based upon the wind and TAS. The RTA can be changed and this will cause a new TAS to be created that will achieve that RTA (provided the wind estimate is correct)

  15. Go to LEGS page 1 This page shows the track and distance to the waypoints along the flight plan. This display works like a spread sheet, scrolling through the information. Select LEGS ETA <LSK 6R>

  16. LEGS page 1 Choose <LSK 6R> LEGS ETA This display shows the ETA and winds Choose <LSK 6R>, LEGS L/L

  17. LEGS page 1 Choose <LSK 6R> LEGS L/L This display shows the latitude and longitude of each waypoint. If LSK <6R> is selected again it returns the display to the track/distance display.
