Module Attendance module on moodle in all classes Revision lectures; 1 per every 4 weeks of a module Introduction of online assessment methods for self-evaluation by students through cross-word generators, mcq etc Group activities/competitions Practical work to be as case-study/real world like as possible, - carry out fake investigations and use “evidence lockers” Students pointed to forms of course related media, eg: academic earth lectures, podcasts, placing rss feeds on their googlehomepage Panels made of members from a cluster and a chair respond to questions from students based around academic topics

Course Course Leaders take a semester 1 module with their class Mentoring programme, 1 lecturer:3 students, 1 meeting a fortnight student given topics relative to their degree to write a blog on, mentor monitors progress to identify problem cases early on Demonstrate to students what can be seen in moodle logs - logins/activity CA elements of first year modules based on high numbers of small assignments where possible, students labs are based around CA exercises that they finish outside of class, allows students to recover from a bad assignment and still pass A real world practitioner to give a seminar on their experience in industry and their job role, 1 blank hour per week scheduled in all students timetables for activities Importance of academic reference that will be sought in final year for jobs instilled in students early on to encourage high work etiquette and attendance Miniature group project introduced in third year to provide students with an insight into what makes up a fourth year project, possibly a single module or a currently running module that is 100% CA given as 1 project with a significant self directed learning component Computing students given appropriate computer account privileges Introduction of a laptop policy, carry out a survey amongst current first years to measure percentage who own a laptop Hanging of academic research posters (based on published full-papers and posters) in labs in Walton building, increases student awareness of research in WIT, lecturers publishing visibly aware to students Development of a CMP twitter deck or RSS feed that appears on moodle pages, gives information on upcoming events/competitions/seminar/publications etc`

Student Student involvement via real world connection - eg: Forensic students encouraged to join ISSA.Useof journal articles for discussion Student opportunities for employment Student events (planned:intervarsities debate, quiz, capture the flag hacking competition, trip to Bletchley park to see Enigma machine) Students given a lecture on the philosophy of being a student at 3rd level, what is required, how to think, how to develop an opinion, how they are not expected to know everything and how to admit they don’t without feeling foolish/embarrassed, realisation of number of hours studied for leaving cert but how they are now operating at a higher level, raise awareness of competition for the “best jobs”, success stories Give students an “Achievement’s of WIT” lecture (invite a successful student, research achievements, employment record, sunday times award) to give a sense of pride in being a CMP/WIT student is Monthly event - eg: student debate, quiz; 3 events per semester Encourage of interaction between different years, possibly through the encouragement of a general computer society “Comp Soc”Use of forums on moodle, lecturer or student raises a topic, students reply and class participation monitored, could be done via modules or mentor programme above

Staff Lecture to be given to staff on different types of intelligence students may have (multiple intelligence), awareness of different forms provide greater student adoption of material, a colleague found implementing this approach has raised class averages, significant improvement in many weaker students performances; suggestion that she gives a lecture to the department Increase student interaction in classes, encourage them to think where the lecture is going, ask how they would examine/approach a problem, getting discussion going, then give adopted solution and why Lecturers encouraged to develop a linked in profile and join groups on linkedin, eg FP7, lots of ideas floated around looking for partners, might motivate staff to think I could do something interesting in that, would raise departmental online presence also Dept of Education hold an IT lecturers conference with workshop sessions based around SIG/cluster topics, teaching tools and ideas etc
