Interpreting Maps to Answer Geographical Questions

This study of geography aims to teach students strategies for reading and interpreting maps to gather information and make comparisons. Students will explore the use of location as a theme to answer geographical questions. Homework includes explaining why lines of latitude and longitude are measured in terms of degrees and providing examples of how innovations have changed the way we find absolute and relative locations.

  1. Objective: In our study of geography, SWBAT acquire strategies for reading and interpreting informational text (maps) to gather information and make comparisons by utilizing the theme of location to answer geographical questions. (NCSCOS 6G)

  2. WB: Why might lines of latitude and longitude be measured in terms of "degrees", and not something else? (miles, kilometers, etc.). Explain why you think it is done this way.

  3. Homework: 1. How have innovations changed the way we find absolute and relative locations? Provide an example (paragraph in notebook). 2. Study guide questions 2, 5, 7, & 9-11.
