Mandate • Coordinates Focus Area 1 (FA1) of MTSIP 2008-2013: “Advocacy monitoring and partnerships” • Expected Accomplishments of FA1: (i) Improved awareness of sustainable urbanization issues at the local to global levels; (ii) Monitoring of sustainable urbanization conditions and trends improved; (iii) Habitat agenda partners (HAP) actively participate in the formulation of sustainable urbanization policies • Implements Subprogramme 2 of Human Settlements Programme, i.e. “Monitoring the Habitat Agenda” • Subprogramme 2 Objective: “To monitor and assess progress towards the attainment of the Habitat Agenda goals and the Millennium Development targets on slums, drinking water and sanitation” MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing

5. Strategy • Global collection, analysis and dissemination of data, including development of gender-disaggregated indicators for measuring progress towards the attainment of internationally agreed human settlements goals • Evidence-based assessment of the effectiveness of the policies and strategies recommended in the Habitat Agenda and elsewhere, as well as dissemination of lessons learned and best practices identified • Evidence-based identification, field testing, dissemination and mainstreaming of new and innovative policies and strategies in the areas of urban monitoring, urban economic development, gender and women’s empowerment, and youth and partnerships MONITORING AND RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES, 18 March 2009, UN Gigiri, Conference Room 4CPR Introductory Briefing
