Background – international students at the University of Gävle • 643 international students; of which 135 come from the EU/EES countries • 508 from ”thirdcountries” of which 460 from China; the other 48 are freemoversmainly from Pakistan and Bangladesh • The China project (2006): Agreements in China with 6 universities and 5 high schools, originating from projects in the Linnaeus-Palme program and from strong commitment by Chinese and otherfacultymembers Forum för internationalisering 23 november 2010

Strategy - and short term plans • The university has workedout a strategy for admittance, tuitionfees and scholarships • Strategyand size of tuitionfeesdecided by the Vice-chancellor on October12th • Strategy for givingoutscholarshipswill be decided in December by the Research and study programmes board • Procedures for handling admittance, scholarships and tuitionfees are in progress Forum för internationalisering 23 november 2010

Shorttem plans • Marketing is ongoing; onestaffmember is assigned to discuss with and adapt the procedures to the Chineses partners • Marketing via agents in Indiastarted-twostaffmembershavevisitedIndia, planned for Russia • The university’sweb not yetupdated with information abouttuitionfees!   6. What’s the problem? • What is a bilateral agreement? • Whatifthere are toofewapplicants – canwecancel? • What is it the student buys – oneinstance of a course plus tworeexams? Thenhe/she has to buy a new courseinstance? • Can we be sued? Forum för internationalisering 23 november 2010

  7. Whatelse is the problem? • Can a student come nextyear and take a second round, ie just pay for the coursesshe/hedidn’t pass last year? Will the student get visa then? • Can a student pay for a/oneyears/ program and takemorecoursesthan 60 creditswithoutpaying extra tuitionfee? • Can wesell extra courses not included in the program? Howabout student services? • Accomodation – are universitiesnowallowedto ownappartments/dorms? • Do wehave obligations to arrange for accomodation? • The Student union has an agency for accomodation, butit doesn’t work verywell for international students • Student Health care? • otherservices…inpact on Swedish students expactations!
