    7. Connections between History and Philosophy: The Interpretations of the “Kun” Hexagram as an example The 2010 annual conference of the Mid-Atlantic Region Association of Asian Studies (MAR-AAS), October 22-23, 2010 This paper examines the methodological connections between historical explorations and philosophical interpretations through comparing the historical background of the Zhouyi (The Classic of Changes) to the philosophical connotation of the Yizhuan(??, The Ten Wings or The commentaries of the Zhouyi). The first among the sixty-four hexagrams of the divination classic Gueicang(??) of the Yin dynasty “kun” is relocated to the second position in the divination classic Zhouyi(??) of the Zhou dynasty. The content of the line statements of the “kun” hexagram is very similar to the content of the chapter “Dor-shi”(??) of the Shangshu(The Classics of History), recording the warning announcement addressed by the Duke Zhou(??) to the remainders of the Yin warriors and officials during the time these Yin people are ordered to migrate to new cropland in the new established city Lor(?). This is the origin of the spirit of reception, humble, retreat and obeys containing in the line statements of the “kun” hexagram. Hundreds of years later the authors of the Yizhuan abandon part of the political implications and introduce more philosophical meaning in their interpretations, praising the spirit of the mother earth as well as the negative force within the universe, and finally induce some very important ideas(especially of Taoism) in the history of Chinese thought.
