  1. Proper Referencing in IBO/QEP Essays and Lab Reports

  2. What do you need to reference? • Your job is to conduct research in order to form an argument for or against the use of plastics in our society. • You want to collect evidence to support your argument and this evidence is what needs to be cited. • If you can show that others in the world agree with your point of view, then you are strengthening your argument.

  3. Common Knowledge • Such knowledge does not need to be referenced. • For example: • Plastics are widely used across the world for a variety of reasons. • If the statement read: • Canada’s plastics industry is one that is worth $17.6 Billion dollars. (Canadian Plastics Industry Association, 2013)  Reference!

  4. In text citations and Bibliographies • In text citations are when you reference the source in the body of your essay. • Ex: Canada’s plastics industry is one that is worth $17.6 Billion dollars (Canadian Plastics Industry Association, 2013). Thus, the plastics industry is clearly of economic importance to this country. • A bibliography is a list of references provided at the end of your paper.

  5. APA vs. MLA • Scientific papers usually include APA citations. • You may choose the style of referencing that you prefer as long as you remain consistent throughout your paper. • Visit easybib.com or bibme.org to help you reference properly.

  6. Images • You should include diagrams and images to strengthen your arguments. • These should be provided in an appendix. • For images and diagrams from the internet, provide a URL after the image.

  7. Example Figure 1: End Use markets for plastics produced in Canada. http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/plastics-plastiques.nsf/eng/pl01383.html Note: The images selected must relate to the content of your essay. Therefore in your essay you would direct the reader to figure 1 in the appendix, and you would explain why this diagram is relevant.
