DEVELOPMENTAL… Employment: Career Advancement Continuing education and lifelong learning Post-secondary: Career Preparation Achieving credentials: college, certification, apprenticeships, military 9–12: Career Preparation Academics and technical courses, intensive guidance, individual graduation plans 8: Transition Choosing a cluster of study and major (can change easily at any time) 6–8: Career Exploration Discovering interest areas K–5: Career Awareness Introduction to the world of careers

Impact on Middle/High Schools • Creation of curriculum templates • Influence on curriculum offerings, teacher demand • Increased rigor and relevance of coursework • At-risk programs (2007-08) • Whole-school reform model (HSTW, 2009-10) • Career specialists (CDF) added to middle and high schools • Counselor (+ CDF) to student ratio reduced to 300:1

Impact on Middle/High Schools • Administrative responsibilities shifted from counselors • Improved communications and transitions to compliment K-12 developmental guidance and counseling programs • Individually scheduled IGP conferences each year—relationships built with students and parents • Integration of students’ personal, career and academic goals • Increased opportunities for dual enrollment • Increased opportunities for extended learning opportunities • Improvement in attendance and discipline • Improvement in graduation rates

Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program • Review G & C Program at your school (Update Annual and Long-Range Plans) • Re-evaluate Program Components within context of EEDA requirements (note common benefits, overlaps) • Eliminate duplication, combine, use all available resources • Be CREATIVE

Individual IGP Conferences • Utilize all personnel in planning, delivery • Incorporate time-saving procedures (video/DVD/power point, large groups, small groups before conferences) • Fully utilize Career Specialist • Combine other relevant Program components within conferences (personal, academic, career) • Utilize websites (www.teachscpathways.org) and other professionals for resources

  11. IGP CONFERENCES • Individual conference with every student • Parent/guardian/designee must attend • Cluster/major chosen by student • IGP signed by counselor, student, and parent • Numbers tallied for report

  12. COUNSELOR ROLE • Lead conference (meet with parent and student) • Interpret assessments, academic record • Integrate career cluster and academic plan • Introduce IGP, sign

CAREER SPECIALIST (CDF) ROLE • Assist with conference logistics (invitation, preparation, materials, etc.) • Maintain accountability information • All students completed career assessment and exploration? • Provide general information to parents and students (clusters, assessments, WOW map, resources, job shadowing)

Supervision of Career Specialist • Learn role and responsibility (see Ethical/Legal, EEDA, etc.) • Establish goals, expectations, calendar, meeting schedule, etc. • Consult with knowledgeable professionals • Become PARTNERS for G & C Program, EEDA, school, student goals • COMMUNICATE often with Career Specialist (scheduled meetings)

  15. 4. At-Risk, Dual Enrollment, Whole School Reform Initiatives • Be team member in school-wide planning • Assume roles aligned with school counselor training • Incorporate related initiatives within established Program components
