Case Studies of Religious Leader Advancing the Aims and Objectives that”Together We Must do More” Anggia Ermarini
Why Religion? • AIDS is a theological challange -- contemporary issue that challanges religious responses • Religion come to give “welfare” and have law to be hold in people’s life.
The Most Challanges • Stigma and Discrimination • AIDS as mainly a Moral Issue
1. Social stigma on AIDS Basis Cultures, Religions, Faiths and Tradition The stigma rooted epistemologically in religious beliefs and practices • Knowledge • Misunderstandig about the nature of the diesese • Affraid of being infected • AIDS rumours
2. AIDS as NOT ONLY moral Issue AIDS = multifaceted crises (social injustice, gender, poverty, education, etc.) The discussion extends to the debate amongst CONDOM; (whether its promotion equals justification for adultery?) the Quest is “How Religions speak about CONDOM in the time of AIDS?”
What to do? ...First thing first..... • We need to map religious community. • We need to invite them to involve • We need to adapt ‘faith based organisations’ (FBOs) that are already running. NOT creating new one!! • We need to facilitate them to dig over their teachings so they are able to talk about AIDS from their own theological understanding • We need to empower them, so they are ‘able’ to talk about AIDS with compassion and LOVE
The three biggest Islamic Organizations that have concern on HIV &AIDS MUI, the council of Indonesiabn Ulama (1975) fatwa [Tadzkirah Bandung, 1995] NU (1926) [Bahtsul Masail (since 1926),1997] Muhammadiyah (1912) (Compilation of Friday sermons on AIDS, 2005)
Research..... • Those FBOsreproduce stigma so we need to educate and empower those leaders • Those FBOs do not have a distinct and specific approach • Paradox between RELIGIOUS LEADERS vs. AIDS ACTIVISTS example “Condom Promotion need to be reconciled • It seems that each organization works alone, and WE think to network them so we may work together as an interfaith network responding to AIDS
The fact of HIV issue • It is not easy to get support from Religious leader. • It is not “sexy” enough for them • Not like peace issue that every one can accept very easy
Strategy • Advocate, facilitate and educate to the religious leader on HIV AIDs • Facilitate between government and religious leader in developing program to response HIV and AIDS • Strengthen network among gov, civil society, community, religious leader in the term of institutional and per individual
Activities; • Advocacy and empower toward religious leader who willing to be champion on HIV • Advocacy by individual and institutional to religious leader who has power • Strengthen the network • Publication – DVD, condom book, CD education on HIV • Campaign –talk show of radio, roundtable discussion • Education--- ( NU as PR),workshop n training
Challenges vs Opportunities • How we invite religious leader to understand that HIV is not only about moral but human crisis and social crisis that is very complex. • How the program is not only a project– sustainability • How “educate religious leader” can influence to other • How to disseminate the best practise • ---(how the HIV issue come to the Fatwa)--- • How “ that religious leader “can advocate the regulation/ decision maker (budgeting, regulation)
