  2. My passion for mechanicsY. Huang Grown up in a mechanics family • Dad: professor of solid mechanics at Tsinghua U. • Mom: structural engineer at Tsinghua U. • Uncle: professor of computational mechanics • Uncle: professor of fluid mechanics at Peking U. • Sister: research assist. professor in TAM at UIUC (passed away in 1997 after 3-yr battle with cancer) • brother-in-law: professor in TAM/MIE at UIUC

  3. My passion for mechanicsY. Huang Education and training in mechanics • Ph.D. Advisor: John W. Hutchinson (2002 Timoshenko Medalist) • Postdoc Advisor: James R. Rice (1994 Timoshenko Medalist) • Postdoc Advisor: Bernard Budiansky (1989 Timoshenko Medalist) Timoshenko Medal – lifetime achievement award in mechanics (by Mechanics Division of ASME)

  4. Recent Faculty Hire in Mechanics and Materials at MIE(1996-2004) Saif (1996): Micro and biomechanics Beaudoin (1997): Mechanics of materials Huang (1998): Mechanics of materials Polycarpou (1999): Tribology/nanotribology Johnson (2001): Micro and nanomechanics -- Ph.D. advisor, Ben Freund (2003 Timoshenko Medalist) Yu (2002): Nanomechanics Aluru (2003): MEMS, nanofluidics Fang (2004): Materials for nanophotonics

  5. Named Appointments of Mechanics Faculty in MIE • Named Professors: Dantzig; Huang; Sehitoglu; Thomas; Tucker • Named Faculty Scholars: Aluru; Dankowicz; Johnson; Polycarpou; Saif; Tortorelli

  6. Mechanics Seminar Speakers in MIE (1999-2004) • Timoshenko Medalists Rice (1994), Oden (1996), Clifton (2000), Belytschko (2001), Hutchinson (2002), Freund (2003) • Other NAS and NAE members Bazant (Northwestern), Hughes (Stanford), McMeeking (UCSB), Needleman (Brown), Nix (Stanford), Ritchie (Berkeley), Suresh (MIT), Wagoner (OSU) • More than 50 mechanics seminars in 6 years • Increase visibility of mechanics at UIUC

  7. My own experiencein the MIE Department • MIE appreciates the fundamental research in mechanics and supports its mechanics faculty. Example – MIE Gauthier Program of Exploratory Research • MIE faculty are very collegial and mutually supportive. • MIE has made mechanics at UIUC stronger and more visible.
