  1. Molecular Models Legend to color representation of the elementsCarbon = BLACKNitrogen = BLUEHydrogen = YELLOWOxygen = RED Kristi Presented by Kami Dykes Lab # 2

  2. What are these molecular structures name and give the formula for them. 1. Hydrogen H2 2. Oxygen O2

  3. What are these molecular structures name and give the formula for them. O H H 4. Carbon Dioxide CO2 3. Water H20

  4. What are these molecular structures name and give the formula for them. 6. 5. Methane CH4 Methanol CH3OH Bonus: Why did the number after CH change to 3 instead of 4? And what is an OH? Answer: The number is added with the OH. OH is a hydroxyl.

  5. What are these molecular structures name and give the formula for them. 7. Ethane C2H6 8. Ethanol C2H5OH

  6. What is the molecular structure’s name and give the formula for it. 9. Propane C3H8 If you added a hydroxyl what would the new molecular formula be as well as the name of it? 10. C3H7OH Propanol

  7. What are these molecular structures name and give the formula for them. 11. Butane C4H10 12. Glycerol C3H5(OH)3

  8. What is wrong with this molecular structure of fatty acid? What is the correct formula? 13. you can add (moving left to right) 2 hydrogen atoms to the 2nd carbon and 1 hydrogen to the last (far right) carbon to fill in all their valences.  This would give you C6H13COOH for the correct formula. C6H9COOH

  9. 13. What is this structure? Neutral fat 14. Is it unsaturated or saturated? Why? It is unsaturated because of the double bonds between the carbons and the fatty acid chains. 15. What did you add to get this structure? What came off of this structure when they combined? Fatty acid (3 times)+ glycerol When they combined H2O was formed three times.

  10. What is the name of this molecular structure? What is the formula for it? Gylcine NH2CH2COOH What is the NH2? amine What is the COOH? carboxyl

  11. What is the molecular structure’s name and give the formula for it. Fructose C6H12O6

  12. What is the molecular structure’s name and give the formula for it. Glucose C6H12O6 What is the difference between glucose and fructose? Glucose is shaped as a hexagon and fructose is shaped as a pentagon. How do you form sucrose? Combine glucose and fructose but one water molecule is lost.
