  1. Bioplastics and Biobasedpolymericcomposites Dr.-Ing. SupakijSuttiruengwong Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology Silpakorn University Sanamchandra Palace Campus Nakornpathom 73000

  2. Application of Bioplastics

  5. On-going research at MSE Bioplastics and BiobasedPolymericComposites

  6. Bioplastics Focusing on the blends of biodegradable polymers such as PLA, PHBV, PBS, PBAT, TPS, PVA, etc. (collaborative with Assoc.Prof.Dr. Manus Seadan) • Application for packaging and commodity articles Focusing on developing novel processing techniques to tailor-made biodegradable polymers e.g. ultrasonic atomizing, supercritical assisted phase inversion techniques • e.g. Porous films, microparticles and monoliths for tissue engineering application

  7. Bioblend • PLA/Ecoflex® • Ecoflex®/Thermoplastic starch (TPS) • PLA/Thermoplastic starch (TPS) • PLA/Ecoflex®/Thermoplastic starch (TPS) PLA + Ecoflex + Reactive agent PLA + TPS + Reactive agent PLA + Ecoflex + TPS + Reactive agent Twin screw extrusion Characterization and Scale-up Desired Products

  8. Biobasedpolymericcomposites • More binary and multi-components • PLA/SPC (Soy protein) • PLA/SPC/TPS (thermoplastic starch) • PLA/PBS/Protien • Future work • Lignocellulose-based polymeric composites • Protien-based polymeric composites • Fundamental research • Structure Property Relationship incl. QSAR • Thermal resistance e.g. freeze and microwave • Solubility determination of bioplastics under high pressure conditions

  9. Industrial Applications Injection molding Blow molding Extrusion blow molding Sheet extrusion Blow molding Extrusion blow molding

  10. Environmental Aspects of Bioplastics • Evaluation of Carbon Footprint (CF) of Bioplastics • Comparison of product-by-product with different conventional plastics and bioplastics.

  11. Outlook มองไปข้างหน้า

  12. http://en.european-bioplastics.org/market/

  13. Research Industry Scale up

  14. Research Industry New PBS plant (PTT MCCBiochem Company Limited) Cheaper polymers? What about PLA? Monomers and Lactide - still expensive but Will PLA be getting cheaper? Scale up Cellulose based polymers and derivatives: possible answer!

  15. Research and Industry High Textile Automotives Volume High Low Prices

  16. Thank you for your attention
