What It Is and What It Is Not [Explained] Key Highlights ● NeoCoV only found in Bats. ● It is not a new CoV variant, it was first discovered in 2011. ● No human infection or death has been recorded till now. Headlines are surfing around the web that a “new Covid variant” known as “NeoCoV” has emerged and it is more life-threatening than the previous versions. The world still hasn’t completely over the first virus, COVID 19, and every few days, there is a new variant spreading. This is continuously changing and upgrading virus is making our lives miserable and forces us to live in terror. So what is NeoCov? Is it really more deadly than the previous variants of COVID? The first case of coronavirus was recorded on 31 December 2019 in Wuhan City, China, and in a short time, it was declared as a global pandemic. Coronaviruses (CoV) contain multiple ranges of viruses that can severely infect both animals and humans. It causes illnesses like the common cold to more severe diseases. World Health Organization (WHO) said, “Animals, particularly wild animals are the source of more than 75% of all emerging infectious diseases in humans, many of which are caused by novel viruses. Coronaviruses are often found in animals, including in bats which have been identified as a natural reservoir of many of these viruses.” What is Neo-Cov?   3. More commonly known as aloe bats, NeoCoV is believed to be deadlier than the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. It is also closely connected to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS COV) as it has 85% similarity to it. MERS Coronavirus is a zoonotic virus that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. This means it is easily transmittable between animals and people. However most of the human cases were reported to have infections spread through human to human. As per the WHO data, approximately 35% of infected people with MERS-CoV have died. Fever, cough, and shortness of breath are some common symptoms. Other than this, Pneumonia and gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea are also seen. So is NeoCoV really dangerous for humans? According to Scientists at Wuhan University, “It is only one mutation away from becoming dangerous for humans.” “One in three people infected could die from NeoCoV.” Currently circulating in South Africa, till now no NeoCoV human infection cases has been recorded but there are high chances of transmission. So, we have to stay alert and cautious! According to the reports created by Sputnik, a Russian News Agency, “NeoCoV and its close relative PDF-2180-CoV can infect humans.” It also indicates that it may have a high transmission rate and can cause a high number of deaths. Researchers at the Russian State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology Vector explained, “at the moment, there are no discussions about the emergence of a new coronavirus that is ready to actively spread in the human population. The risks identified by Chinese experts are potential and require further study.”
