The level of your mental health helps you determine how you make choices, handle stress and relate to others. WHO defines mental health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.<br>

  1. Mental Health Mental health is a level of your psychological, emotional and social well- being that controls how you act, feel and think. The level of your mental health helps you determine how you make choices, handle stress and relate to others. WHO defines mental health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. From childhood to adulthood, mental health is very important at every stage of life. If you struggle with mental behaviour/ health over the course of your life, your mood, behaviour and thinking could be affected and you may face depression, anxiety, stress, mood disorder, addiction or other psychological concerns. There are a lot of factors that contribute to mental health problems such as:

  2. 1. Life experiences like abuse or trauma 2. Family history of mental health problems 3. Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry Warning signs The following feelings or behaviours could indicate an early warning sign of a problem. It’s important to seek a doctor if you experience one or more of the below signs. 1. Thinking of harming yourself or attempting suicide 2. Withdrawal from people and usual activities 3. Fighting/ yelling at family or friends 4. Having unexplained pains and aches 5. Smoking, drinking or taking drugs more than usual 6. Hearing voices/ seeing or believing things that are not true 7. Experiencing severe mood swings that causes problems in relationships 8. Having low or no energy Treatment There are many treatment options available. You can choose the treatment, or a combination of treatments that works best for you. 1. Psychotherapy- Paired with medication, psychotherapy is the most effective way to promote recovery. It is a therapeutic treatment of mental illness, provided by a trained mental health professional that explores feelings, behaviours, and thoughts and seeks to improve an individual’s well-being. 2. Medication- Medication does not cure mental illness completely but can help you manage the symptoms. 3. Hospitalization- In some cases, hospitalization may become important to closely monitor an individual, for his accurate diagnosis or to have his medications adjusted when his mental illness worsens.

  3. 4. Support Group- It is a group meeting that comprises of non-professionals but people who have suffered from similar experiences. Members of the group guide each other towards the shared goal of recovery. 5. Self-help plan- It is a unique health plan where an affected individual addresses his condition through strategies that promote wellness. Such plans include addressing recovery, wellness triggers or warning signs. 6. Peer Support- Peer support refers to achieving help from individual who have been through similar illness or experiences. Although many health problems are common but they can be treated. However, not all mental health problems can be completely treated, they need to be managed with medications, psychotherapy, companionship, etc. World Mental Health Day, observed on 10th Oct every year, aims at raising awareness of mental health issues across the globe and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
