  1. Why is Anxiety and Depression Increasing in Today’s Society? Be it real life or be it social media, everywhere you look, you’ll find people dealing with Stress, Anxiety and Depression. A few decades ago anxiety and depression were experienced by a few. But now, it has become a common mental condition. Not just adults, but teenagers and children are also facing panic attacks and mild depression. One way to justify the above piece of content is that back in the time of our grandma’s and grandpa’s; people were not open to discussing mental health. Lack of knowledge about symptoms and treatments can also be a reason for less reported cases of anxiety and depression. Also, the fear of stigma was another reason for not disclosing harmed mental conditions. This doesn’t mean that the rise in mental health issues is caused by people being more willing to admit being anxious or depressed. Now, when we look at the other side of the coin, we can clearly see that major stressors like social media, education pressure and other societal compression are some of the reason which led to the growth of anxiety and depression in today’s scenario. Many people admit to being stressed but don’t consider themselves

  2. depressed. The problem is that stress is a risk factor for depression, and depression often shows up in physical symptoms. Unfortunately, we are residing in a stressful society which puts us in tough situations, affecting our mental and physical health. Our interpersonal relationship and community ties are getting weaker. We are more focused on materialistic goals like money, fame, reputation and social competition. Kids and teenagers are facing peer pressure which, forces them to show conformity to society. We easily get influenced by other people’s lives on social media. Our expectations have become too high, probably because of the overrated emphasis on ‘you can be anything you

  3. want to be’. Unrealistic hopes and comparison are the major stressors leading to anxiety and depression. You must know that your physical health is a result of your mental health. A healthy mind automatically results in good physical health. But, nothing comes for free. You need to work hard to maintain good health and peaceful physical health. Anxiety and Depression are not ‘easy-treatment’ mental conditions but individuals can begin to work on their mental health by choosing a positive and realistic approach towards life. If you, or someone that you know, is struggling with stress or mental issues, know that you and they are not alone. There are many support services and alternative treatment options in addition to psychological treatment and improved lifestyle choices that provide help for anxiety and depression. Don’t be afraid to discuss it with your General Practitioner. It’s better to seek advice and treatment as soon as possible.
