  1. TC.3 OIC 2019 Design I Narrowband Angle Filter Bill Southwell 4-June-2019 OSA Optical Interference Coatings Conference Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, USA

  2. What is an Angle Filter? • A new Interference Coating that discriminates light on the basis of its angle of arrival • Potential Applications • Optical communications • Block bright light from near-by sun, moon, or star • Stray light rejection on detector planes

  3. Normal Incidence Cavity FilterNot a good Angle Discriminator

  4. 30˚ Cavity FilterΔλ = 1 nm : Δθ = 1˚

  5. Angle of Incidence (AOI) • Ray = sinθ cosφ+ sinθ sinφ+ cosθ • Filter normal (Normal Incidence Filter) • Cos(AOI) = ● = cosθ (Independent of φ) • Filter tilted (tilted ˚) • Cos(AOI) = ● = sinθ cosφsinβ+ cosθ cosβ • x,z plane: φ =0: AOI = θ - β • y,z plane: φ = 90˚: Cos(AOI) = cosθ cosβ

  6. Angle of Incidence for a 30˚ Tilted Filter

  7. Tilted Filter only Discriminates in Angle in one Plane Tilted filter transmission in a 10˚ by 10˚ angle patch around 30˚

  8. Optical Axis Filter a Filter b 90 degrees Consider Two Tilted Filters Projection of the filter normal vectors are separated by 90˚

  10. Synthesized Narrowband Angle Filter 1 degree FWHM

  11. Optical Axis Filter a Filter b 90 degrees Synthesized Narrowband Angle Filter 1 degree FWHM Ta Tb Ta*Tb

  12. Off-Axis Rejection of Angle Filter

  13. Tristimulus Filter Color Gamut450 nm, 530 nm, and 650 nm

  14. 3 Color Angle Filter

  15. 2 Tilted Tristim Angle Filters

  16. Summary-Narrowband Angle Filter • An optical interference coating • Operates at a tilted angle to incoming light • Passes light only from a narrow angle band width (designable) • Rejects light from other angles in the plane of the tilt • A two tilted filter configuration • Reduces bandwidth • Provides omnidirectional angular rejection • May be cascaded to produce extremely high rejection • May be designed to pass multiple wavelengths • Identify planetary atmospheric molecules • Tristimulus color transmission
