  1. Making the Pieces of Safety FitEHSS and CSD connect to tackle Lab Ergonomics Presented by Thorsten Weber and Melanie Alexandre

  2. What were the problems? Great science • Customer had ergo issues in the lab he wanted to address • Possible solutions required multi-disciplinary efforts • Customer needed to work with various folks, but not sure who and how Hand tools Training Power tools Step stools Laser safety Platforms Hoists Forklift use Rigging …busy scientists with bad backs…

  3. Examples of issues Working with heavy loads at hard to reach places Working in tight spots/ confined spaces

  4. Examples of issues continued

  5. What did we do? • Kick off meeting with customer to determine needs and issues • Established • ‘Project Manager’ from EHSS • Project tracking sheet • Responsible EHSS person or vendor/expert for each project • On-site meetings with experts • Communication plan & updates

  6. Acquired power tools and special or custom made hand tools Examples of Solutions • Designed custom made rigging gear and frame • Exchanged vacuum chamber lids from heavy metal to lightweight acrylic After Before

  7. Dollies, transfer plates, jacks, cranes & custom pallets jack trays • Stool, stepstools & custom made platforms • Created “Ergo Material Handling” course for short term guests (EHS0056) • Designed and built leaning frame

  8. Lessons Learned “Safety is a top priority” but how do you make it happen...? From ‘Customer’ Perspective This project manager: • connects us to new experts and other divisions • acts as a mediator in and outside the group • identifies problems and avoids dead ends • provides completely new ideas and solutions I haven't thought were even possible (EHS0056) 20 people in our group alone profit from the outcome

  9. Lessons Learned From ‘Project Manager’ Perspective • Involved a shift in thinking • Takes time… but worth it • Importance of communication, collaboration and support • Need to get in the ‘trench’ and work side by side

  10. Rigging Subject Matter Experts Ladder Safety Project Manager To keep in mind… Customer Supportive Supervisors Ergonomics EHSS Training may be nothing new BUT… • Highly productive in solving complex cross divisional issues • Creates network of experts & covers multiple aspects simultaneously • Generates better and longer lasting solutions than silos • Good potential return on investment (time, money, efforts) Various LBNL Divisions Laser Safety Outside Vendors Safety Coordinator however, such efforts FAIL if… • Project manager and customer do not have support from their supervisors and safety division coordinators • Manager and customer are not committed, open minded, and responsive

  12. More Problems Small Lifting Projects: work under 500lbs are handled the same way as moving 16tons Hallway Safety – the BET needs support: How to enforce obstacle free hallways ?
