Generation of Waste by Source-Definitions • (Waste) : • Materials that are not prime products (i.e., products produced for the market) for which the generator has no further use for his own purpose of production, transformation or consumption, and which he discards, or intends or is required to discard. • It excludes material directly recycled or reused at the place of generation (i.e., establishment) and waste materials that are directly discharged into immediate surroundings of water or air as wastewater or air pollution.
Additional Definitions Manufacturing: All waste from manufacturing activities. Construction: All waste from construction activities. Household: Waste material usually generated in the normal functioning of households.
Additional Definitions Continues Other Economic Activities: All waste generated from commercial, institutional, medical and cruise ships. Other Sources: All waste generated from clean bulk, bulk waste, street sweep, sewage and tyres.

Data Source • Antigua & Barbuda National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA)
Method of Data Collection • The NSWMA receives the data from the country’s landfill (Cook’s Landfill). There, the waste is collected, separated into the various categories and weighed on arrival.
Data Availability • Data is available for the time series • from: • - 2006 - 2010 • - 2007 - 2011 • - 2008 - 2012 • - 2009
Data Gaps • There is no data available in this format prior to 2006 and the data for 2013 is still outstanding.
Recommendations and Areas for Improvement • It is recommended that private agencies that dispose of their own waste should keep detailed records on quantities of wastes that are disposed by defined categories on an annual basis. This recording and collection of data should be encouraged by the NSWMA and the NSWMA should store this data.
Recommendations and Areas for Improvement Continues • The Fire Department issues licenses to the general public to carry out open burning activities. It is recommended that records be kept of waste quantities burnt by defined categories. This data should be stored by the NSWMA.
