Join us as we pioneer interprofessional education (IPE) in healthcare through collaborative sessions for Nursing, Med Lab, and Med Rad students. Our programs span various fields in the School of Health Sciences and Community Services, overcoming challenges to facilitate innovative learning experiences. Discover our journey from Pneumonia Day to MI Day and our plans to expand integration for a holistic healthcare education.

Pneumonia Day One small step for IPE, One large step for RRC (with apologies to Neil Armstrong)
Our programs • At RRC, we have Baccalaurate Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Radiation Technology, Primary Care Paramedicine, MRI, Dental Assisting, and Health Care Aide – 1000 students • These programs are found in 3 different departments, with 3 chairs, but are all part of the School of Health Sciences and Community Services
Our realities • We are located in a 50 year old building with many out dated labs and classrooms • Our province has not funded simulation and IPE similar to other jurisdictions • We have to “fight” the rest of the college for capital and renovations • To begin IPE, we had to “think within the box”
What we did for Pneumonia day • February 2012 – PCP, Med Lab and Med Rad students (approx 100) got together • PCP … the symptoms of pneumonia • Med Rad …the x-ray, a CT scan – normal vs abnormal • Med Lab …pneumonia “under the microscope” • Presentations made by faculty
Processing the learning • Worksheets were developed for the students • Facilitated discussions to see the need to work together • No formal evaluations were undertaken
What came next? • In April, they had MI day • PCP taught the on scene assessment with a 12 lead EKG showing the abnormal pattern • MLS – chemistry analysis – Troponins level • MRT – angiography suite, cardiology, xray • Showed blocked artery and demonstrated the repair • Positive feedback, but watch acronyms
Where do we go from here? • The plans for next year will expand to include nursing • Appropriate changes will be made to the time tables • Students will start to make the presentations instead of faculty • Eventually, this work will be evaluated
