  3. Overview The Urinary System rids the body of nitrogenous waste while regulating water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of the blood. The main organs of this system are the Kidneys, Blatter and Ureter.

Anatomy • Kidneys; Although some believe the kidneys are located in the lower back, these small, dark, red, bean-shape organs lie against the dorsal body wall (beneath the parietal peritoneum) in the superior lumbar region. • Ureter; They are two slender tubes each 25-30 cm. long. Smooth muscles in the walls of the ureters do play a part in urine transport other than gravity. After urine has entered the bladder, it is stopped from entering back into the ureters by small valve like folds. • Bladder; this collapsible muscular sack is just posterior to the pubic symphysis. The bladder wall is made up of transitional epithelium and is coated with mucus on the inside.

Physiology Functions of each organ: • Kidneys; disposing of waste and excess ions, regulate the bloods volume and chemical make-up, producing enzymes to regulate blood pressure, and produce a hormone to stimulate red blood cell production. • Bladder; Storage sack for the urine. • Ureter; Transportation of the urine.

  6. Urine Formation • Each kidney contains over a million tiny structures called nephrons. They are structural and functional units of the kidneys and are responsible for forming urine. Urine formation is a result of three processes: glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion. Glomerular filtration is a passive process in which fluid passes from the blood into the glomerular capsule. Tubular reabsorption transports needed substances from the filtrate from which they are absorbed into the bloodstream. This process is important for getting rid of excess unwanted substances (drugs, potassium, or additional means for controlling blood Ph.). • Urine is made of unneeded nitrogenous wastes and water.
