MSMG • Location: Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania • Contact: Joe Gutherie, Lori McShea (MSMG) and Julie Vastine (ALLARM) • Number of sites sampled: 10 • Analytes: Specific conductance, TDS, strontium, and barium • Goal: The Murrysville Stream Monitoring Group was formed to monitor the quality of water in local creeks and streams. By establishing a scientifically sound baseline, the group hopes to be in a position to quickly detect changes in the water quality, caused by any number of detrimental activities.

Conclusions • Unconventional drilling for natural gas is occurring in Westmoreland County • The MSMG is providing conductivity, TDS, Ba, and Sr data to the public dataset for the northeast in areas of gas development • Conductivity concentrations for the MSMGs’ 10 sites are above the mean for conductivity measured and reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as NWIS data since 1960
